Chilling out by the Bay
Published 08/07/2016
Weligama is a wonderful town situated in Down South. And with the Highway up and running to Matara, you can exit from Kananke and after a 15 minute bumpy ride you come the wonderful Mirissa Bay that is laid out before you. Breathtakingly beautiful during sunrise and sunset, one can always fall in love with this place over and over again.
With this amazing beachfront and fishing boats all tucked at the shore, you can wake up to a morning of busy work (on a good fishing day) or to a quiet beach, where you can take long morning walks or take a dip at the shallow end of the ocean. With all this and more to offer, no wonder the hotel trade is building so many properties in and around the Bay. One such hotel that is taking full advantage of actually being right in the heart of the bay, is Fisherman’s Bay hotel which was once the Bay Beach Hotel.
The Colombo Fort Hotel took over this property 3 years ago and came into full operation from February 2015. There are 51 Deluxe (27) and Superior Rooms (24) and are planning to add more rooms in the coming future. The Superior Rooms give a direct sea-view, Twin/Double beds and usual amenities in the room. The Deluxe Rooms give a view of the beautiful bay and come with the same amenities in the rooms.
Speaking to the General Manager of the hotel Rohan Gamage, he said that the reason they took over this property was because of the popularity of the place, and the fact that the Mirissa Harbour is just 10 minutes away. “The location gives the best view and in time to come, this particular property will be the best one in our group”, Rohan added.
Most of the guests who come over here are not for long stays but more for like stopovers during their long tours of the island. A lot of families and repeats that come over here mostly for the excursions they offer. Some of the exciting excursions guests can experience are – Whale Watching, Mirissa Bay, Madul Duwa in Galle, Snorkeling, as well as a Snake Farm, which sounds quite interesting…(not for me though :)). Long distant excursions are trips to Yala and Katharagama. If guests like to stay indoors and enjoy the hotel itself, they can get together for a game of pool or darts, carom or take a dip in the pool to cool off the heat. They also have entertainment every night where they bring in a live band, shows and something always going on for the guests.
The hotel is also now becoming very popular for wedding functions. They have a restaurant downstairs which can accommodate around 200 pax for such a function. They added that when they got the books from the property, the list of weddings held here was very impressive. A lot of honeymooners come here and this place gives a beautiful backdrop for photo shoots of any kind.
The season begins from August and it will be the ideal time to catch surf waves too if you’re in the vicinity.
As it is well patronized by round tour grouping and excursionists, you even have lunch groups coming in and if you’re in the mood to have your next group conference somewhere beachy then you can call on 2326967 or log on to their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/fishermansbay.weligama#.
